On Sunday July 18, 2021 at 8:30 am (Central European Time), history was made at the Zwift Tri Battle Royale. World Record holder in IRONMAN full-distance triathlon, Jan Frodeno took on Top IRONMAN Pro-athlete, Lionel Sanders in a bid to smash the world record and prove once and for all who is the long-distance “King of triathlon”.
Two of the world’s famous triathletes competed against each other in IRONMAN Triathlon distance (3,86 km swim + 180 km bike + 42,2 km run) to see who is the ultimate fastest.
The distance located in beautiful Allgäu on the foot of the German Alps, the best sports ground for the Tri Battle Royale is a fast and scenic 226 km full distance, real world triathlon. The region is rich in triathlon history and home to some of the best roads in Europe.
The full-race of 226 km is set in the beautiful Allgäu Valley in southern Germany, nestled by the foot of the German Alps.
Starting with a 3.8 km swim in Immenstadt’s freshwater lake, Großer Alpsee, the two competitors must complete 4-laps along a marked loop.
Swim Split Times
• Jan Frodeno – 45:58
• Lionel Sanders – 50:58
Out the water, the racers jump on their Canyon TT bikes and head out for 180 km of racing along Allgäu Valley floor, which is sheltered mercifully from the brunt of the wind. The stunning bike course travels from Allgäu to Burgberg, with a flat 5-laps along the river en route.
The final of the running marathon involves four 10.55 km laps of an out-and-back loop around the mountain town of Burgberg. The course boasts almost no elevation gain, giving the racers no excuses to push themselves to the limit on this final stretch.
Jan Frodeno has won everything that matters over the course of a career that now spans two decades. The German Gentleman, who lives and trains in Girona, Spain, is known for his precision and elegance on and off the triathlon course. Jan holds the current world record, is the reigning Kona champ and won the Olympic Games in 2008. Despite his unquestionable success, Jan still finds ways to raise the bar further, all while inspiring others. The goal of the Tri Battle Royale is to achieve that once again. No more. No less.
Jan Frodeno setting a New World Record in 7:27:53!
That’s a great 45:58 swim, 3:55:22 by bike, and 2:44:21 incredible time at the running marathon!
Lionel Sanders is battle-hardened and knows how to put up a fight. During his university years he struggled with an unhealthy lifestyle and personal issues. But, determined to be better, Lionel fought his way back and now is the hottest competitor for the ultimate triathlon crown. He is a multiple IRONMAN champion and winner of the ITU Long Distance World Championships 2017. Maybe there is no one in the business who loves breaking boundaries like the “Canadian Powerhouse”. He developes the form for his victories with infamously hard training sessions, where he goes right to the limit and above.
Lionel Sanders comes second with a new personal record of 7:43:28!
That’s 50:58 for the swim, 4:00:26 by bike, and 2:50:31 for the running marathon.

ZWIFT TRI BATTLE Royale announces first ever World Record *NFT in 7:27.53
In another historic first, the World Record is minted as an NFT. An NFT, or ‘non-fungible token’, is a unique, digital certificate that is stored on a blockchain and provides certain ownership rights in an asset such as a digital work of art. NFTs are described as ‘non-fungible’ because each one is unique and of different value.
