The Maltese winter swimmer smashed a European record in age category of M35-39 at the 25m Freestyle. The Baltic Cup races took place in very cold water + 3 °C. The walls of the competition lido and swim lanes were covered in ice crumbs.
“For me, this is a great personal experience and new opportunities for the development of a new sports direction in aquatic sports” – says Andrzej Waszkewicz.
“If the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta allows me, I will be happy to develop winter swimming in Malta as a very popular sports discipline, in which World Cup series, national championships and of course the prestigious World Championships are held annually” – he adds.
Why winter swimming is a good for Malta:
• A new sports discipline provides additional opportunities for the development of Aquatic sports in Malta;
• The participation of athletes in the new championships is a competing for the international medals and prestige for the Olympic Movement of Malta;
• This is an excellent development of Malta tourism in the “low season” when the sea is cool and the sun is mild and hundreds of active swimmers from all over the world can host wonderful sports camps:
• And of course, this is an increase in the level of safety on the water, swimming in cold water and promotion of the healthy lifestyle with the help of hardening procedures.
